1. Dalongdong Cultural and Historical District (大龍峒)
This district, located on Dalong Street, features two prominent temples — the Bao』an Temple (大龍峒保安宮) and the Taipei Confucius Temple (台北市孔廟). Both temples are across the street from each other, and both feature impressive architecture and represent a significant part of Taiwan’s culture and history.
2. Taipei Expo Park (花博公園)
Near the Dalongdong District is the Taipei Expo Park. The Taipei Expo Park was the home to the 2010 Taipei Flora Expo. While no longer hosting those displays, the Park still hosts beautiful gardens and various exhibitions. If you want to, you could pay a little more for Fine Arts Museum and Taipei Story House located nearby. The Fine Arts Museum (台北市立美術館), as the name suggests, holds many exhibitions of popular art pieces throughout the year. There is free entry on Saturday nights. The Taipei Story House (台北故事館) is a unique little house that also holds various performances and exhibitions, especially centred around tea.
3. Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall (中正紀念堂)
The Memorial Hall is an impressive building dedicated to one of Taiwan’s founding leaders. It is definitely worth a visit, if not for the impressive architecture, then to understand more about Taiwan’s history and politics.
4. Bitan Scenic Area (碧潭)
Bitan is a riverside park with many amenities, from restaurants to paddling boat rentals. It is a great way to relax away from the city! Bitan also features a 200 metre long suspension bridge, which lights up at night to create a beautiful art show. It is a spectacular view and we highly recommend visiting at night.
5. 44 South Village (四四南村)
The 44 South Village (pronounced four-four in Chinese instead of forty-four) was built as a housing village for veterans of the Kuomingtang army. Although now it no longer has that purpose, part of the village was conserved and turned into a cultural, historical, and educational hub for tourists. The village has various exhibitions and cafés for you to spend your time. It is also a short walk from Taipei 101!
6. Taipei Botanical Gardens (台北植物園)
The Taipei Botanical Gardens is as grand as it is beautiful. It displays over 2000 different species of plants! Besides being a beautiful site, the Botanical Gardens is also an important research and educational institution. You can view here what flowers will be in bloom when you visit.
7. 228 Peace Memorial Park (二二八和平公園)
This park, near the Chiang Kai Shek Memorial Hall, serves to remember the innocent lives lost during the February 28 (228) tragedy. The 228 incident was a significant one in Taiwanese history. This monument serves for us to remember and honour the lives lost that day. You can read more about the 228 incident here.
8. Treasure Hill Artist Village (寶藏巖國際藝術村)
Much like the Rainbow Village in Taichung, the Treasure Hill Artist Village was originally a settlement for Kuomingtang veterans. However, in recent years, the government decided to breathe new life into the village, and how Treasure Hill is a popular destination, showcasing various art exhibits and many cafes. It is a quaint little area that holds a lot of history and charm.
